My writing life

My editor is going through the changes I made to Electric Storm based on the feedback from my last beta reader. Then we'll be formatting the book ready for publication. I'm not confident enough of timelines to give a publication date but I do know it would be amazing to get reviews up by then. So, if you enjoy sharing your opinions of books you've read on social media and e-book platforms and would like to join my reviewer team, please respond to this email, and I'll set you up with a review copy of any of my books.

The day job, for now....?

If you've come across my Author Bio you will know that I train guide dogs for the blind. This month I’m introducing you to another one of my favourites. Though, I am realising that I think I mention that almost every dog I introduce you to is my favourite…😆

Oh well… they’re all awesome.

Not that this boy started off liking me very much. He’s the kind of dog that didn’t really like the work because he didn’t understand it yet. And as long as he didn’t understand it, he just looked at me with the question: if I don’t get the point of this, why the hell would I do it for you? It was a very intriguing dynamic, and I couldn’t just wave a treat in his face to motivate him either. Even though he is a Labrador! A breed quite known for willing to do nearly anything for a treat.

No, this boy needed to love you, to want to learn something from you. And once I got him to love me, only then did he want to learn. And once he learnt, he realised that he actually quite enjoyed guide work! It really was like a switch turned in his head, and he realised: oh I get to guide you around? That’s actually kind of fun.

But still… only fun when doing it with a person he loved. Because when a colleague of mine trained him for a day, it was as if he’d just started school and knew nothing. Sneaky little sir.

But that’s good to know. That means I really need to focus on the bond between him and his future client before even daring to start with guide work.

But once I get that bond in place… then this man means business! Then he is unstoppable and actually very smart indeed. Even when he sometimes doesn’t look it… but that just made me love him more.
