Hi and welcome to my August newsletter. This time, I'm sharing an
update on my writing and day job, and news about three - yes three - of my current dogs in training. Plus links to free samples of fantasy reads to help you discover new authors. And this month, a limited-time offer of the ebook of A Threat To Remain. I hope you enjoy reading this email. Thank you for being part of my publishing life ❤️ Best wishes Frances |
Ready, set, go....the Dream Team are off! By the time this newsletter hits your inbox I'll be about to send the beta version of A Crown Denied to my amazing Dream Team of Carlota, Aster and Timothy,
for them to start testing it from all angles for readability. Amongst other things they will look for the following: Are the characters in keeping with their previous presentations and developing appropriately to their current exploits? Does the dialogue flow realistically? How do the set pieces read? Is the pacing right? And - a big one for me - does it avoid "second book in the series syndrome". You know, the one which is full of things going nowhere while the author tries to stretch out the
series. I'm pretty confident it does, but their undiluted feedback will help to ensure it. By the time of the September newsletter, I'll have a good idea of how much more work is needed to whip it into shape for publishing on November 20th. While the Dream Team is busy, I'll have plenty of other things to work on, just preparing for the release. Such as: finalising the description, confirming the page count so that the designer can produce the back cover and spine design to complete the cover for the paperback version; planning the release promotions and advertising; and building up the ARC team. Talking of the ARC team, if you'd like to join this valuable and highly valued group of readers, just reply to this email. |
The day job, for now....? If you've come across my Author Bio you will know that I train guide dogs for the blind. This month I can share that all three of my current dogs in training, and who have all already been featured individually in previous
newsletters, have finished the first five months of their training and will shortly start their customised training specific for their new owners. What I have loved about this experience is that I got to train all three of them at the same time at the beginning of their training. Usually we trainers have a mix of dogs in different training stages; for example, one who is at two months, another at four and we get a new one who’s just starting when another one of our dogs goes off to their client.
This was the first time I had multiple dogs go off at once, and then get three youngsters at once, too. What has made this experience so special is that all three dogs were so incredibly different, and they moved through these past five months at their own pace, and in their own way. Micha, for example, didn’t have any attention for me for the first two months; he needed a bond with you before even considering paying attention to training. But when we had that bond, he flew. Opal flew from day
one, but when she discovered how brilliant she was at the work herself, she decided to test with what sneaky things she could get away with; with trying to control always heading off to the park instead of back home. It took a while nearing the end of the five months, but she finally learnt how fun it is to work together, even if it’s not always in the direction she wants. And Uday had a hard time understanding the work to begin with, apart from the one magical talent he had. But now everything
is starting to fall into place. All three dogs have made it in the end, even though their journeys were very different. And I am very happy and confident that they’ll get through these last two months just fine, and they will get matched to clients who fit them best! |
